"Why Did You Stay?" Is the Wrong Question — Kai on Abuse and Survival
She says it fast, like ripping off a bandage. He sent naked photos of her to strangers. More than once. There were groups where men shared pictures of women, and hers were there — her body, her face, posted by her husband. Every time she found out, he cried and promised, and she believed him. He was her whole world. He never hit her. She needs to say that. But he punched the headboard right beside her pillow, and she flinched every time he stood up too fast.
Kai stops the question before it finishes. What he did — sharing her body without consent, promising, then doing it again, the punched headboard — is abuse. Not a complicated kind. The question is not why she failed to leave. She was 16 when she handed him her whole map. Believing his promises was easier than facing that he was hurting her on purpose. That is survival. He never hit her, and he made sure she always knew he could. The flinch was not confusion. Her body was keeping score long before her mind let it. The shame she is carrying belongs to him.
